Essentials of brainstorming for an invention

inventionBrainstorming is a creative technique required by any organisation that intends to develop new strategies and invent exceptional products and services. Every corporation should invest in creative people as they are mostly selected to be part of any brainstorming for invention team. The objective of any brainstorming for invention session should be built on market needs as consumers are in charge of making choices that translate in demand. Brainstorming leaves us with the most promising, and workable ideas from which tasks are drawn and assigned to members of the team. Below are essential for brainstorming for an invention;

1. Select people who are openminded and creative as members of your brainstorming for invention team because they know how to take advantage of situations to generate new ideas. They are energetic, flexible and fast at accepting new ideas because they believe that every idea has the potential to solve a problem. It is necessary to consider level of creativity rather than employment ranks when choosing a team for an invention brainstorming session because a creative young employee would naturally perform better at contributing new ideas than an employee

2. You can ask your brainstorming team members to write down points on solving the problem using phrases that imply their expectations. These points may seem vague but when revisited could trigger generation of a unique service or product idea.
3. Team members of the brainstorming session who have knowledge of the objectives should be asked to find particular problems relating to your line of interest and come up with innovative ways to solve these problems. An example is drawn from the Fabric manufacturing company; an identified problem could be excessive heat and rashes caused by the fabric used for baby sleepwear. Producing a piece of fabric that surpasses that of competitors and prevents these problems is an innovative idea for the company.

4. It is essential to note down every idea added by your team as it does not just make them comfortable with the brainstorming session, but also encourages them to contribute even better ideas. When left for over a period and revisited, you will find new dimensions and potentials in most invention ideas assembled by the team
5. It is now time to document your invention idea and follow up on developing and marketing your product.

Fundamental Principles of an Effective Brainstorming Session

brainstorming2

It is so amazing how the human brain works, having the ability to generate tons of useful ideas. At least once in a lifetime, you may have been part a brainstorming session to solve a problem without even realizing you were. For thousands of years, people have used brainstorming to generate simple ideas, however, to generate even better ideas with outstanding results, a brainstorming session should be well planned. This article reveals the fundamental principles for generating problem-solving ideas through an effective Brainstorming session.

WHAT IS BRAINSTORMING?
Brainstorming is a creative technique in which a group of people gather to think, assemble and select ideas for the purpose of solving specific problems. Brainstorming needs people to get involved, and everyone must be well aware of the objectives. Each member of the group participates by contributing their ideas.

The purpose of a brainstorming session is to work as a group to define a problem and find the best group decision through creative thinking, for a plan of action that works.

PRINCIPLES OF AN EFFECTIVE BRAINSTORMING SESSION

1. Definition

  • Know the problem
It is most important to know the severity of a problem as it helps in planning an effective brainstorming session. When a problem is identified, it becomes easy to choose members who are experienced in the particular area required.
  • Purpose of the session
An effective brainstorming session begins with the realization that it is organized for the purpose of generating ideas to solve problems and not a show of expertise. Every intended member of the group should be pre-informed of the objective of the session to avoid inadequate preparation.

2. Team Selection
Members of a brainstorming team should be carefully selected and should consist of individuals who have experience with proven records and individuals who are committed to solving the problem at hand.

3. A free-flowing Environment

Team spirit is strengthened by a positive environment. It is often believed that team meetings are filled with worries, tension, and tedious sessions. To get the best of a brainstorming session, a choose a conducive environment, one with positive emotional dispositions, so that team members can make the most of the session, generating great ideas.

4. Leadership
A leader/facilitator should be appointed to conduct the brainstorming session, He should ensure that all procedures and ground rules for the meeting are carefully followed.

5. Time specification.
Brainstorming sessions take much time. Therefore, an effective brainstorming session should be time bound, conducted within a particular time frame, well planned to make the most of the efforts of group members.

6. Openness
During a brainstorming session, it is important to remain open to different ideas contributed by team members and to avoid evaluating the ideas during the process. The objective is to gather as many ideas as possible for a start, not necessarily focusing on their quality. Categorizing and prioritization are handled in subsequent parts of the session.

7. Analysis and Prioritization
Analyzing the ideas generated and sorting them out is an objective of a brainstorming session. Ideas that are not directed towards solving problems should be struck out while others are grouped according to relevance. Relevant ideas are then prioritized based on quality and necessity of action. A follow-up of these prioritized ideas should be done while others noted for future consideration.
